Playing Golf

The On-Course Model

The On-Course Development Model is broken down into 10 Divisions. Each Division has 4 milestones for you to achieve. This allows you to create small, achievable goals within each Division!

Setting up your round

To get started you will want to choose whether you need the GPS and scorecard, or just the GPS. Tap on the sections below if you are unsure which option is best for your round!

GPS + Scorecard

PURPOSE
In this mode, you will be able to use the on-course GPS and track your scores and stats. This mode is great for the majority of the rounds you play while using the Op 36 app.

GPS Only

PURPOSE
In this mode, you will only use the on-course GPS and there is no place to track your scores and stats. This mode is great to use during your 9-hole events.

Tracking your stats

Tracking basic stats during your round will let you and your coach know what you need to improve to lower your scores and shoot par (36) or better!

Putts

Track your total putts
PURPOSE
99.9% of the time, a player new to Operation 36 will find that putting is the most challenging part of the game. Total putts counts how many times it takes a player to get the ball in the hole once it is on the green.
HOW TO TRACK
Count the number of strokes needed to get the ball into the hole once it is on the green.
YOUR GOAL
15 or fewer total putts for a 9-hole round
(30 or fewer for an 18-hole round)
SUGGESTIONS
  • Practice putting from different distances
  • Improve your chipping so you can get the ball closer to the hole
  • Make sure your putter is fitted for you

Greens

Track your Greens In Regulation (GIR)
PURPOSE
If you only tracked one stat, how many greens you hit in regulation would be the one that gives you the best insight into how you can improve.
HOW TO TRACK
Hitting a Green In Regulation (GIR) means that your ball stopped on the green and you have at least a birdie putt.
A birdie is a hole score of one stroke less than par, e.g. on a par 4 having a score of 3 would be a birdie.
When playing you will have hit a GIR when:
  • On a par 3, you hit the green in 1 shot
  • On a par 4, you hit the green in 2 shots or fewer
  • On a par 5, you hit the green in 3 shots or fewer
YOUR GOAL
6 or more GIR for a 9-hole round
(12 or more for an 18-hole round)
SUGGESTIONS
  • Practice your distance control with your irons
  • Make sure you know how far you hit each of your clubs
  • Work with your coach to improve your swing

Fairways

Track your fairways hit
PURPOSE
The third stat, and one that only comes into play when you start playing from Division 6-10, is fairways hit.  This is a measurement of accuracy off the tee and isn't as good of a stat as GIR or Total Putts, but it does help a player understand if their tee shots are strong or weak.
HOW TO TRACK
If you are playing a par 4 or par 5 and your tee shot comes to rest in the fairway, you mark a fairway hit.
YOUR GOAL
5 or more fairways hit for a 9-hole round
(10 or more for an 18-hole round)
SUGGESTIONS
  • Create a fairway for yourself on the driving range when practicing
  • Make sure your driver is fit for you
  • Work with your coach to improve your swing
