The Golf Course Isn't Just for the Guys Anymore (And It Never Should Have Been)

Operation 36

Picture this: you're standing on a practice green, putter in hand, and you look around. A decade ago, you might have been the only woman in sight. Today? There's a mom and daughter working on their short game two holes over, a group of friends laughing their way through a round, and a twenty-something celebrating a par on her first nine-hole round. Something has shifted - and it's about time.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Here's the thing most people don't realize: women are the fastest-growing group in golf right now. According to the National Golf Foundation, over 8 million women and girls played on a golf course in 2025, and the number of female golfers in the U.S. has held above 6 million for six straight years. A level the game hadn't seen since before 2007. Since 2019 alone, the net gain in female golfers is 2.5 million. That's a 46% increase in just a few years.

And it gets better. Women now make up 28% of all on-course golfers, the highest proportion ever recorded. Among beginners? That number jumps to 35%. More than a third of today's junior golfers are girls, compared to just 15% back in 2000. The game is changing, and women are leading the charge.

What's really interesting is what's happening off the course, too. At places like golf entertainment venues, simulators, and driving ranges, women make up 43% of participants. These casual, low-pressure environments are giving women a chance to pick up a club, figure out they actually enjoy hitting a golf ball, and then take that confidence to an actual course. It's a pipeline — and it's working.

Why Now?

So what changed? A few things. Golf has started to shed its stuffy, exclusive reputation. Nine-hole rounds are becoming more normalized (over half the scores posted by new female golfers are nine-hole rounds). Dress codes are loosening up. And programs that start new golfers close to the hole, rather than dumping them on a 400-yard par four and saying "good luck" - are making the game feel achievable from day one.

That last part matters more than people think. When you start close and work your way back, you're actually playing golf from your very first time out. You're putting for a real score, chipping onto a real green, celebrating real pars. That's a completely different experience than spending months on the driving range wondering if you'll ever feel ready.

What This Means for You

If you've been thinking about trying golf or getting back into it after stepping away, you're not alone. Over 21 million Americans who don't currently play have said they're very interested in getting on a course. That's an enormous number of people who just need the right invitation.

And if you're a woman who's felt like golf isn't really "for you," look at what's happening. The game is more welcoming, more flexible, and more fun than it's ever been. You don't need a perfect swing. You don't need to play 18 holes. You don't need to know all the rules or own a full set of clubs. You just need to start.

Find an Operation 36 program that lets you begin close to the hole and build from there. Grab a friend. Play nine holes. See what happens. Something might just click and you might wonder why you didn't try it sooner!
